So much of the value in a higher education program comes from the professors and how deeply they care about the subject matter and their students. For Dr. Imani Brown, professor of accounting at the University of Mount Saint Vincent, respect for the subject matter and providing meaningful career guidance to her students is all part of her teaching philosophy. “I love accounting so much that I would rather teach it than just do it solely on my own,” Dr. Brown said. Her enthusiasm is obvious to her students.
Dr. Brown is an accountant by trade and holds three degrees in accounting. She spent time working in the field before discovering her motivation to teach. After earning her certified public accounting license, she worked within the auditing sector of Ernst & Young in the healthcare section for about three years. This was especially challenging during the pandemic. “It was a crazy hectic time,” Dr. Brown said, “but I had a lot of great learning experiences that I love to reflect on. I take those experiences that I learned from working out in the field into my experiences as I teach in the classroom here at Mount Saint Vincent.”
Accounting runs in the family for Dr. Brown. “My mother worked in accounting, and she said if you go get your degree in accounting, you’ll be all set,” Dr. Brown said. “I put full faith in my mom. I really loved the analytical aspect to it, being able to troubleshoot and problem-solve and figure out how the financial aspects of the business environment was really working.” Dr. Brown’s faith paid off, and after becoming a teacher’s assistant and having the opportunity to mentor students, the teaching seed was planted. “Seeing that light bulb flash above a student’s head when they finally understand debits and credits is what keeps me passionate every day.”
Teaching at the University has proven to be a positive experience for Dr. Brown. “Mount Saint Vincent stands out because we center the student experience. We meet students where they are, understand their goals, and help them cross the finish line.” She sees value in the convenience of a fully online education for her students, and prides herself in being available for career guidance. “Mentorship is everything,” she said. “I want students to know I’m here even after they leave my class.”
